Story

Itsuki “Ikki” Minami, is a student and a delinquent. Also known as the “Unbeatable Babyface”, Ikki is the leader of the youth gang by the name of “East Side Gunz”. Upon his return home, after being humiliated by a Storm Rider team called the Skull Saders, Ikki discovers a secret hidden from him by his benefactors, the Noyamano sisters. The sisters belong to a group of Storm Riders who go by the team name of Sleeping Forest. In the anime, learning the sisters’ secret angers him and he steals a pair of Air Trecks, abbreviated as “AT”. (In the manga, the sisters give a pair of ATs to him and invite him to skate with them.) Ikki eventually settles his grudge with the Skull Saders, but in the process he receives more than the simple satisfaction of revenge. Determined to experience the sensation of “flight” for as long as he can, Ikki is quickly engaged in the mysterious, irresistible world of Air Treks.

Itsuki “Ikki” Minami Voiced by: Kenta Kamakari (Japanese), Chris Patton (English)

The main protagonist of the story, he was given Air Trecks (in the anime, he took them himself) and soon delved into the world of Storm Riders. Eventually he creates a team, Kogarasumaru. Originally trained to become the Sky King by Sora, he soon finds himself betrayed by Sora and Nike, (Sora’s twin brother) who steal his Regalia. Shortly thereafter, Ikki becomes the Storm King and follows the “Hurricane Road.”

Kazuma “Kazu” Mikura Voiced by: Kenn (Japanese), Clint Bickham (English)

A long-time friend of Ikki, Kazu is a friend who’s always by his side. He is a speed-type rider who has recently inherited the title of Flame King following the path of the flame road along with Spitfires old AT’s. Due to his speed he got the nickname Stealth.

Onigiri Voiced by: Masami Kikuchi (Japanese), Greg Ayres (English)

Also a long-time friend of Ikki, Onigiri is a “perverted pig” as called by most. He has an unorthodox riding style, wearing his Air Trecks on his head and riding it upside-down. He has his own unique Road called the Smell Road, which uses an opponents senses against them.

Issa Mihotoke “Fats Buccha” Voiced by: Hitoshi Bifu (Japanese), Mark X. Laskowski (English)

Formerly of the Team Yaō (Night Kings), Buccha was defeated by Ikki and his team was forced to disband. Eventually, he joins Ikki’s team as one of the main power riders, making use of his extremely large build and strength.

Akito/Agito/Lind Wanijima Voiced by: Kokoro Kikuchi (Japanese), Blake Shepard (English)

He is the Fang King with a split-personality. Akito is the “light” side while Agito is the “dark” side. They used to work for the police team of “WIND” until inspired by Ikki to leave and join Kogarasumaru after being rescued. Their split-personality changes depending on the side their eye patch is worn. Akito wears his patch on his right eye, Agito on his left. Later, a new personality named Lind emerged. Lind is somewhat like a “big brother” personality. He claims he is the original personality of the body.

Plot Summary: It is mid-december, and SOS Brigade chief Haruhi Suzumiya announces that the Brigade is going to hold a Christmas party in their clubroom, with Japanese hotpot for dinner. The brigade members Kyon, Yuki Nagato, Mikuru Asahina and Itsuki Koizumi start preparing everything for the party, such as costumes and decorations. But a couple of days later, Kyon arrives at school only to find that Haruhi is missing. Not only that, but Mikuru claims she has never known Kyon before, Koizumi is also missing, and Yuki has become the sole member of the literature club. The SOS Brigade seems to have never existed, nor has Haruhi Suzumiya. No one in the school has ever heard about her… except for Kyon.

Synopsis: On the surface of the world Beastmen reign supreme, following the dictates of the Spiral King to ruthlessly eliminate any humans who dare ascend to the surface. So long has humanity languished underground, in fact, that some believe the surface to be a myth. Not Kamina, boisterous leader of a group of malcontents he calls Team Gurren. His determination to reach the surface gets a boost when a face-shaped mecha called a Gunmen crashes through the ceiling of his underground village one day, with the halter top-clad, gun-toting babe Yoko in hot pursuit. Kamina’s timid friend Simon the Digger has also found a buried Gunmen and the key to activate it, which allows him, Kamina, and Yoko to defeat the original Gunmen and “pierce the heavens” with Simon’s drill.” Thus begins an epic adventure to form a team of like-minded discontented humans who will rise against the Beastmen, steal their Gunmen out from underneath them, and challenge the might of the Spiral King and his powerful Generals head-on. Along the way tragedy strikes, but the arrival of a princess no longer content to be one of the Spiral King’s dolls helps Simon to rise to his full potential and lead Team Dai-Gurren to glory. But the Spiral King himself still awaits. . . Review: In 2007 Gainax visited one of their long-time favorite genres – old-school mecha – and made a paean for the ages to the boisterous spirit and irrepressible machismo of those mecha classics, which came in the form of the 27-episode TV series Gurren Lagann. Late in 2008 they revisited the franchise and produced the first of two compilation movies, which came to be subtitled Childhood’s End in the States. As the first of those movies, this 112 minute effort equates to episodes 1-15 of the TV series, covering the series’ content from the beginning through Simon’s emergence as the leader of Team Dai-Gurren and the defeat of the last of the Spiral King’s generals. After some scattered theatrical screenings in late 2009 and early 2010, Aniplex is now releasing the first movie to the American video market, albeit exclusively (as of this writing) through Bandai Entertainment’s online store. The big draw for established fans of the series is that this version of the story does contain several minutes of new footage. Though the bulk of the movie is composed of footage recycled from the first ten episodes, all carefully-edited to move the story swiftly along through less important points to emphasize the major scenes, it does open with three minutes of new footage in which the Spiral King sets up the background for the current situation. In addition, the last twenty minutes or so of the movie are not only entirely new animation but also decidedly stray from the battles against Lordgenome’s last three Generals as shown in the TV series; in this version, Team Dai-Gurren must confront the final three Generals in one epic battle (rather than three different ones), Nia must be rescued under different circumstances, the path to Simon regaining his confidence is quite different, and there is some mega-combining action going on that was never even hinted at in the original series. Arguably the most intriguing new footage involves Yoko’s part in the epic battle, especially her hand-to-hand battle against Adiane. Even for someone who has never seen the original series, this all makes for quite the elaborate and rousing spectacle. And yet, for all of the flash, something seems missing here. There are definitely moments where the movie embodies the vivacious spirit and surges of manly emotion which made the original so captivating to watch, but it does not happen as often or as effectively in the movie. The editing job is a smooth one which gets the essence of what happens in the scenes being glossed over and even cleverly synchs lip flaps of carefully-chosen scenes to the series-themed rap song playing during the big flash-forward part in the middle, but it also cuts the opportunity for character developments – especially the Kamina/Yoko relationship-building – short and almost entirely ignores Rossiu, which could become a problem for new viewers when the second movie gets to the “seven years after” part. The business with the skull Kamina finds is never explained, either, which is a detriment given what a turning point that was for Kamina. The story advancing at breakneck pace actually does not hurt as much in terms of the plot development, as the content of the original series was padded with quite a bite of foolishness (the hot springs business is, thankfully, reduced to a couple of brief clips). The technical merits of the new animation are so consistent with those from the series that one who has not seen the original series could not tell between old and new footage. It is not the prettiest of movies, with its stylized, often heavily caricatured designs, bizarre mecha models, and color schemes so overly busy that they border on garish, but it is a fun-looking movie complete with many amusing little touches, especially in the icons shown on the interior mecha screens. The animation also certainly has its own distinctive style, one which emphasizes bold, exaggerated movements at the expense of fine detail and glories in its characters’ exuberant attack forms. The artistry and animation does, in classic Gainax style, pay careful attention to Yoko’s bouncing curves, but beyond the typical jiggle gives only a couple of brief scenes of fan service. The musical score recycles many of its numbers from the TV series, including the interlude rap song, and stays stylistically consistent with its handful of new numbers. As in the series, the music here does a solid job of supporting and enhancing the spirit of the content, although it does not hit its peaks quite as often here. The new Japanese dub retains all of the principle original cast, thus once again showcasing what a top-notch cast can do when allowed to perform with full gusto. Aniplex is apparently not providing an English dub this time – or at least one is not included on this release. The curious distribution method aside, Aniplex’s choice of options for Extras is a mix of great and dumbfounding. The main disk only has some promo trailers for Extras, but a bonus disk is included which contains four alternate-reality videos involving characters from the series shown in a music video/movie trailer-style format called “Gurren Lagann Parallel Works Part 1.” These are inventive bits which include a fantasy-themed one featuring Simon, Kamina, and Viral as heroes rescuing the imprisoned Princess Nia, a Pachinko-themed one involving various characters getting distracted by land-based and space-based mecha Pachinko, a bizarre medieval Japan-theme bit with distorted character designs, and a role-reversal bit which features Viral as the hero (complete with love interest!) and Kamina as the Big Boss. These total about 16 minutes and are a great diversion for any devotee of the franchise. The box the DVD case comes in also include a reproduction of the 28-page Deluxe Program Book sold in Japanese theaters, one which seems to include character profiles, cast and staff interviews, and a whole bunch of other stuff that will probably be very neat if you can read Japanese, as Aniplex didn’t bother to translate a word of it! Granted, that may be a true Japanophile’s dream, but those are hardly going to be the only people interested in buying this movie. Aniplex is doing a disservice to fans by not translating this. Childhood’s End is a slick production which offers a lot of bones for established Gurren Lagann fans (even those who already own the TV series) and may be comprehensible to newcomers, though clearly it is intended much more for the former audience. Whether or not Aniplex’s release strategy proves successful will bear watching.

Plot

Fate/stay night chronicles a two-week period in the life of Shirō Emiya, an amateur mechanic who attends a school named Homurabara Gakuen in Fuyuki City. Ten years ago, Shirō was caught in a massive fire that incinerated his parents and consumed a large portion of the city; as he was dying, an enigmatic man discovers and treats him. This man, Kiritsugu Emiya, decides to adopt him, though the two maintain a distant relationship because of Kiritsugu’s frequent departures from Fuyuki City. One moonlit night, Kiritsugu and Shirō had a discussion outside of their home, and Shirō discovers a fact about his father that Kiritsugu was actually a mage.

Through their conversation, Shirō learns of his foster father’s failed life ambition to become a “Hero of Justice” (正義の味方 Seigi no Mikata^?), a guardian of mankind who could protect the weak and innocent. Touched by Kiritsugu’s conviction, Shirō affirms to his foster father that he intends to devote his life to achieving that distant ideal, much to Kiritsugu’s chagrin. To do this, Shirō pleads with a begrudging Kiritsugu to teach him sorcery (魔術 Majutsu^?); but being born without the capabilities of a magus, Shirō proves to be talentless in almost all the fundamental sorcerous disciplines.

Kiritsugu warns his son that the life of a sorcerer is one that leads to destruction, but if he is truly set on benefiting people, he should apply his knowledge in secret and hone his craft in private. After Kiritsugu dies, Shirō becomes frustrated with his progress, feeling inadequate about his good deeds through sorcery and is unsure of how to orient his future to contribute more.

Unknown to Shirō, Fuyuki City is the setting for a secret and violent war among competing magi. For the past two centuries, seven sorcerers have gathered and engage in a Battle Royale, each gambling his or her own life to obtain the Holy Grail, a legendary chalice capable of granting wishes. The past four Holy Grail Wars have typically occurred every sixty years, with the most recent concluding a decade ago, but the fifth war has started prematurely.

Each of the sorcerers, better known as Masters, is aided by one of the seven summoned spiritual familiars known as Servants, who are the reincarnations of legendary souls from all across time. These resurrected Epic Spirits (英霊 Eirei^?), possess superhuman characteristics and wield powerful artifacts or abilities called Noble Phantasms (宝具 Hōgu^?). A Noble Phantasm’s hidden abilities may be released by invoking its true name, but casual brandishing of a Noble Phantasm is best avoided, for symbolic Noble Phantasms usually belie a Servant’s identity, diminishing that Servant’s competitive advantage. Specific legends may be summoned with the aid of catalysts, which are artifacts, ideas, or experiences similar or of value to the desired Servant. Only one Servant can be summoned in each war from one of seven classes: Saber, Archer, Lancer, Berserker, Rider, Assassin, and Caster.

As only astral entities (i.e. Servants) are physically capable of retrieving the Holy Grail, Master and Servant are forced to cooperate. Masters control Servants with three Command Mantra (令呪 Reiju^?), which are crystallized miracles issued by the Holy Grail that manifest on a Master’s body. When activated, Command Mantra permit a Servant to accomplish an incredible feat, or alternatively provide Masters with the authority to issue an irrevocable and absolute order to a Servant. When all three Command Mantras are used up, Servants are no longer obliged to serve their Masters, and as such, may freely choose to turn upon their ex-partner. In the event of a Master’s demise, a Servant may choose to bind him or herself to another Master; if a Servant is slain, a Master may ally with a wayward Servant or pursue sanctuary with the Holy Grail War’s impartial supervisor, who is traditionally a delegate of the Roman Catholic Church.

The Holy Grail materializes fully only when there is one Servant left standing; therefore, it is not necessary to vanquish Masters in order to win the war. However, as many Servants possess powerful Noble Phantasms and are grueling to defeat, many participants have chosen instead to eradicate Masters, who are responsible for maintaining a Servant’s presence through the supplication of Mana.

After cleaning his school’s kyūdō (archery) dojo late one night, Shirō stumbles upon two Servants, Archer and Lancer, battling in the school courtyard. To avoid compromising the war’s secrecy, Lancer hunts down and pierces Shirō’s heart with a spear. For an unknown reason, Shirō’s classmate, Rin Tōsaka, uses an heirloom filled with concentrated magic, Mana (魔力 Maryoku^?), to resuscitate him. Shaken and dazed, Shirō returns home only to be assaulted a second time by Lancer. Shirō weakly defends himself against Lancer, but is soon overwhelmed by the powerful Servant’s attack, and is sent flying into his shed’s storage room. Cornered, Shirō prepares for the worst; but before Lancer can inflict another fatal blow, a young woman outfitted in alabaster armor blocks Lancer’s spear. After driving Lancer away from Shiro, she introduces herself as Saber.

Sho Yamato enjoys MTB (mountain biking) a whole lot, he’s always practiced at the “X-Zone” with his friends, Kakeru and Makoto, on a bike his dad has built, called “Flame Kaiser”. One day, he was challenged to a race by a MTB team called Shark Tooth and whoever won the race got the X-Zone. For Sho, the X-Zone had always been a place of happy memories. He had spent many days there with his father who had disappeared, so he couldn’t lose the game. During the race with the leader of Shark Tooth, black smoke suddenly covered the ground around them, and they were sent to another world that’s also called the X-Zone. When Sho woke up, he found Kakeru, Makoto, and his MTB Flame Kaiser, were also there. Of course, they didn’t know where they were… While they were wondering what had happened, MTB riders came. They challenged Sho to a Idaten battle, a form of MTB race in X-Zone. They said the only way for Sho to return is by collecting 10 emblems by winning Idaten battles. This is how Sho came down to compete in Idaten Battles at various courses, such as ghost towns, volcanoes, ancient ruins, deserts, and snow-topped mountains. Now Sho must Idaten Battle for the sake of returning home.

After returning home, Sho returned to X-Zone to find his lost father, Takeshi while taking on the mysterious Team X.

Characters

Protagonists (Sho and Co.)

• Sho Yamato (山登翔(やまと しょう)): The main character of the story, he is an excellent MTB rider and can do amazing tricks. He later defeats Gabu for the control of X City with the assistance of Koei, Kyoichi and Makoto, then Arthur. After defeating his father (who was under the control of an ancient evil), Sho chose to leave behind his friends to stay in X-Zone, but with the help of Hosuke, Sho was able to travel freely between Earth and X-Zone and reunite with his friends in the X-Zone MTB course. His MTB is Flame Kaiser.
• Makoto Shido (獅堂まこと(しどう まこと)): She is a girl MTB rider and is Sho’s childhood friend. She later realizes that her MTB is a legendary Idaten Bike called Neptune Emperor.
• Kakeru Sakamaki (坂巻駆(さかまき かける)): Kakeru is a very skilled mechanic and helps Sho fix his bike a lot. He is also one of Sho’s best friends.
• Hosuke (ホースケ): A talking owl that accompanies Sho on his journeys. Hosuke followed Sho during a prison break attempt to rescue Sho, Makoto, and Kakeru. After Sho had defeated his father, it was revealed that Hosuke is Yuki’s grandfather disguised as an owl. After his brother Takeshi had been transported to Earth, Hosuke became the king of X-Zone. However, time moves much faster in X-Zone than it is on Earth, so Hosuke became an old man when Takeshi finally returned to X-Zone. Plotting to stop the ancient evil, Hosuke secretly became the talking owl, but without the memory of his former identity until he returned to his human form. In the end, Hosuke managed to help Sho get to Earth.

Supporting characters

• Kyoichi Shido (獅堂京一(しどう きょういち))：Makoto’s older brother, and a trial bike champion. He appeared in masked form in early episodes up to episode 5 when his identity was revealed. He was captured by Mr. Teacher when trying to find out more about Team ST. He later helps Sho fight Gabu. When it came to Team X, he ended up under the control of them and is trying to fight the Dark Emblem’s control. Sho managed to defeat him. His MTB is Thunder Emperor (Thunder King in the English anime), but rode Imperial Tiger when under the control of Team X.
• Yuki (ユウキ): An expert mechanic. She helps Sho and Co. on different occasions. After Gabu’s defeat, it was revealed that Yuki is a princess of a royal family and part of a group who protects the X-Zone and the secrets of the X-Zone.
• Koei (孤影(こえい)): A ninja biker hired by Gabu. He first appeared to take on Sho and Kyoichi. He injured Kyoichi and broke his MTB Thunder King, and took out the Four Kings that were battling Makoto. When he battled Sho, it ended up a draw when the Four Kings interfered. He thwarted another plot by the Four Kings when they tried to “assist” him when he thought of it as dishonorable. In his battle against Arthur, the Four Kings successfully interfered causing Arthur to lose. It is later revealed that Koei works for Gabu because he couldn’t afford a doctor for his sister Kiku. Once she was rescued from Gabu’s clutches, Sho and Koei battled again and he lost. Afterwards, he stopped serving Gabu and aided Sho in defeating him as he took out the adult members of Team ST. Later, he ends up under the control of Team X and was freed by Sho. He has Taiga watch over X-City while he is away. His Idaten Bike is called Aero Scissors.
• Arthur (アーサー): Nicknamed “The Painter,” Arthur is a knight biker. He first appeared in Gabu’s tournament where he beats Taiga. Prior to his battle against Koei, he stumbled onto a plot by the Four Kings only for them to be thwarted by Koei. In Gabu’s tournament, he lost to Koei due to interference by the Four Kings. It is later revealed that he worked alongside Yuki to help protect the secrets of the X-Tower and heal the X-Zone. His Idaten Bike is called Hammer Head (Iron Hammer in the English anime).
• Ayumu Yamato (山登あゆむ(やまと あゆむ)): Sho’s younger brother. He later joins Sho in his search for their father. Ayumu was forbidden to ride on bike because he became maniacal whenever riding one.
• Takeshi Yamato (山登猛(たけし))/ Takeru Yamato: Sho Yamato’s father. When he was falling during a bike accident, he was brought into the X-Zone to repair Imperial X during a power crisis. When he tried to return to the his home world, he disappeared alongside Yuki’s father and was never seen again. During his disappearance, he had also built Thunder Emperor, Neptune Emperor, Imperial Tiger, and Imperial Dragon while struggling against the power of Dark Emblem, and also seen by Kyoichi in hooded form. He was later reappear in Imperial Island as Team X leader, possessed by the ancient evil of the X-Zone, to challenge Sho and destroy both worlds. After Sho had defeated his father, it was revealed Takeshi was an X-Zone native that had been transported from Imperial Island to Earth, then he subsequently started a family, built Flame Kaiser and X-Zone MTB course before the accident. At the end of the series, he chose to stay in X-Zone to train Sho as the new guardian.

Team Shark Tooth

A group of bikers that serve as the first antagonists of the first half of the series. Upon their invasion on X-City, they went by the name of Team ST (チームＳＴ) and gained some followers in the process. Besides a substantial number of unnamed grunts, the members of Team ST are:

• Gabu Samejima (鮫島牙舞(さめじま がぶ)): Leader of the Shark Tooth MTB team. Upon his arrival in the X-Zone one year ago. he became dictator of X-City after overthrowing its mayor. He was said to have lured many MTB Riders to his team. In episode 10, Revelations, it is revealed that although he is the leader of the Shark Tooth gang, he is actually the younger Samejima brother and that his team arrived earlier. He was also in Kakeru’s algebra class. He was defeated by Sho in X-City, but later returns to help fight Team X. His bike is called Bloody Fang (changed to Poison Fang in the English anime).
• Taiga Samejima (鮫島大牙(さめじま たいが)): The oldest Samejima brother and second in command of Shark Tooth. When confronted in the cave and defeated in an Idaten battle with Sho, he revealed that the Shark Tooth MTB team came to the X-Zone one year ago. In his brother’s tournament, he lost to Arthur resulting in him being kicked out until Gabu’s defeat. When Team X later came to power, he became X-City’s protector while Koei is away.
• The Four Kings: Made up of Kiyoshi, Mitsuru, Sayji, and Mantaro, The Four Kings are four MTB Riders who are members of the Shark Tooth MTB team. Though they are unskilled riders, they are often a cause problems by interfering through their underhanded tricks.
• Captain Jackal: Member of Team ST. He and his crewmen challenged Sho when Sho was on a ship to X-City. They did get away with some of Sho’s Emblems and handed them to Gabu and Taiga. He also helped the other adult members of Team ST into preventing Sho from reaching Gabu. He was defeated by Koei and arrested by the X-Zone Police Captain prior to the black smoke returning him to Earth.
• Yoko & Rika: Two sisters who are resort tycoons and members of Team ST. They turned a local village into a slum when they used the villager’s money to build their resorts in Gold Celebresort City and ended up making everything in their resorts expensive. While Yoko does the MTB battles, Rika uses parts of MTBs to build Yoko’s MTB rider. They defeated the villagers to gain their money. When their men captured Yuki, Sho had to Idaten Battle Yoko for her freedom. Despite the difficulty on the sand dunes, Sho beat Yoko when her bike, overlaid with expensive jewels, fell apart. They reappeared to help the other adult members of Team ST into preventing Sho from reaching Gabu. They were defeated by Koei and arrested by the X-Zone Police Captain prior to the black smoke sending them to Earth.
• Mr. Teacher (ミスターティーチャー): A biker in a school theme park and member of Team ST. He captured Kyoichi and Sho had to beat him in order to rescue him. He reappeared to help the other adult members of Team ST into preventing Sho from getting to Gabu. He was defeated by Koei and arrested by the X-Zone Police Captain prior to the black smoke returning him to Earth.
• Prince Ryota: Ruler of a kingdom in the middle of a lake and member of Team ST (despite this, he isn’t like the other members of that group). To get info on how to get to X-City, Makoto challenged him to an Idaten Battle. The reason why Ryota was winning is because his butler Sebastian has been secretly sabotaging the wooden bridges on the courses without the Prince knowing.
• Pete & Danny: Members of Team ST. They sabotaged Sho’s bike trailer and framed Makoto causing them to get into a fight. They challenged Sho to an Idaten Battle in the rain since they knew that they would have the advantage after stealing Flame Kaiser’s pedal from the sabotage. When Sho and Flame Kaiser are sidelined, Makoto ended up defeating them, realizing that her bike is a legendary Idaten Bike that specializes in water. They reappeared to help the other adult members of Team ST to prevent Sho from reaching Gabu. They were defeated by Koei and arrested by the X-Zone Police Captain prior to the black smoke returning them to Earth.
• Jiro: Nicknamed “The Leopard,” he worked for his father’s mattress store in X-City until he joined Team Shark Tooth. When Gabu gave him an MTB that has a motor engine, he didn’t use it until Gabu took control of the bike. After that and being defeated by Sho, he quit the Shark Tooth team. He later ended up under the control of Team X and Idaten Battled Sho on Earth and was defeated again. He was sucked back into the X-Zone for his failure.
• Shadow: An MTB Rider who specializes in MTB Battles in dark places. In Gabu’s tournament in X-City, Sho Idaten Battled him in the subway where he was defeated. He seems to be working for Gabu since he is seen helping the other adult members of Team ST into preventing Sho and Co. from getting to Gabu. He and the others end up fighting and defeated by Koei and are arrested by the X-Zone Police Captain prior to the black smoke returning him to Earth.

Team X (チームX)

A team of bikers that invaded X-City and turned everyone they defeated into their slaves with the Dark Emblems they placed on their MTBs. Their base is on Imperial Island and have served as the secondary antagonists of the second half of the series. Among the known victims are:

• Fisherman Masagi: A fisherman MTB Rider and his fellow villagers who ended up under the control of Team X. A disguised Kyoichi under the control of Team X had given orders to Masagi to capture Ayumu and defeat Sho. Ayumu was challenged to an Idaten Battle by him and fell into the fisherman’s trap. Sho Idaten Battled him where Masagi anticipated that Sho would get caught in the high tide. Ayumu escaped and tried to help Sho before the high tide occurred. Once Masagi was defeated, the rest of the villagers were free from the Dark Emblem.
• Count Freddy: A vampire-like MTB Rider under the control of Team X who resides in a haunted mansion. He was the one who infected Makoto, Kakeru, Ayumu, Hosuke, and many of the mansion’s inhabitants with Dark Emblems that gave them zombie-like personalities. When Sho encountered him, he Idaten Battled Count Freddy in the mansion with the windows shut. Once he was defeated, the victims were freed.
• Spike and Whip: The male and female MTB Rider duo. They lost against Sho Yamato and Gabu Samejima in an Idaten Battle.
• Imperial Knights: The white-suited MTB riders that appear in large groups in Imperial Island. They serve as the foot soldiers to Team X. In the final battle with Team X, all of them were defeated by Ayumu.

Minor Characters

• Masumi: Sho Yamato’s mother.
• Rogue MTB Riders Leader (町のボス): His real name is unknown, but is referred to as “The Boss.” He is an outlaw biker who challenged Sho immediately after Sho had entered X-Zone. After he was defeated, the biker help saved Sho and Hosuke from the local X-Zone Police.
• X-Zone Police Captain (警備隊長): A police officer and captain of the northern guard who arrests unsanctioned Idaten Battlers. Sho beat him to prove that he is not associated with the Rogue MTB Boss. He reappeared to help protect the citizens of X-City from danger. He later ends up under the control of Team X and Idaten Battled Sho on Earth only to end up being defeated and freed from the Dark Emblem, then he was pulled back into the X-Zone. He later returns to help fight Team X when Sho is on Imperial Island.
• Shin the Shadow (シン): A cowboy biker. His winning secret is that he has a twin brother taking over the course in the middle of Idaten battle. He used that cheating move to defeat Sho, but Shin the Shadow was defeated by Kyoichi who exposed Shin’s winning secret.
• Terry the Megaton (テリー): A heavyset MTB Rider in a bear-skinned cape who is the leader of Team Bandits (チーム・バンディッツ). They uses traps to steal MTBs. Sho had to beat him in order to get his bike back. Once he was defeated, he and Team Bandits renounced their thieving ways.
• Zentaro (ゼンタロウ): A professional MTB rider who owns a bike shop in Volcano Village. He owns the blueprints of Imperial X.
• Takuma (タクマ): Leader of the Poison Spider MTB Team (毒グモ団). He accused Zentaro of giving him a rigged tire which injured one of his teammates and planned to take some of the bike parts in Zentaro’s shop as a refund. Sho had to MTB Battle him in a volcano in order to prove Zentaro’s innocence. Takuma lost to Sho when the volcano shook, but he was saved by Kyoichi.
• Seiji (セイジ): Leader of the Hyper Brain (ハイパーブレーン) MTB team.
• Jun (淳): Mechanic of the Hyper Brain MTB team.
• Tasuku (たすく): Rider for the Hyper Brain MTB team. In Gabu’s tournament in X-City, he lost to Kyoichi.
• Ken (ケン): Nicknamed “The Grim Reaper,” he and his henchmen disguised themselves as girls to learn Sho’s weaknesses from Hosuke. Sometimes, he ends up laughing which turns into a girl’s laugh. He reappeared on TV where he and his minions were fighting Gen while being a victim of Team X.
• Native MTB Rider: An unnamed MTB Rider in a tiki mask. He and his team resided in a temple and used a mist that causes hallucinations on opposing teams. They used it to defeat Sho, but were defeated by Makoto who recently obtained Neptune Emperor.
• Gen: An MTB rider who lives in the snowy mountains with his daughter Rin. In Gabu’s tournament in X-City, he lost to Taiga. He was eventually returned to Earth where he was seen fighting Ken and his minions on TV.
• Rin (リン): Daughter of Gen.
• Go: Nicknamed “The Falcon”, Go is an MTB Rider in a miner town who claimed that he beat Flame Kaiser. He claimed that to impress his younger sister Saya. After an accident years ago, he’s been afraid to get on his bike. With Sho’s help, he got back on and defeated two punks that were attacking their town.
• Sunset Brothers: Joe and Reiu are the gatekeepers of the North Gate of X-City. Sho had to Idaten Battle them at dawn in order to get into X-City. Sho learned from their mother that Joe had a bump on his forehead during their Idaten Battle with Team Shark Tooth who defeated them. Sho eventually defeated them and went on to X-City.
• Mayor of X-City: The unnamed mayor that ruled X-City before Gabu overthrew him.
• Bonnie C: She serves as emcee of Gabu’s tournament in X-City.
• Nostradamus Saiyaka: A gypsy MTB Rider who can predict the future. In Gabu’s tournament, Arthur Idaten Battled her and beat her when she dropped her crystal ball and tripped over it with her MTB at the starting line. She later crashes the battle against Arthur and Taiga and ended up being saved by Arthur when she fell off the ramp.
• Kiku (菊(キク)): Koei’s younger sister. She falls ill in her first appearance and is later captured by Gabu causing Koei to end up doing whatever he wants. Once she was freed, Koei and Sho continued to returned to their battle.
• Takahiro: A boy who had lent his bike to Ayumu during the match between Sho Yamato and Jiro in real world.
• Ichibashi and Honda: Yuki’s trusted MTB trainers who resided in the X-Zone. When Takeshi was in X-Zone, they were trained by him to be mechanics. They gave Sho and Co. an all-terrain bike trailer on their journey to Imperial Island
• Germ Man: A microbial MTB rider and his germs that infected Makoto with bad fruit found in the Nameless Forest. Sho was shrunken down to size to face Germ Man. Once Sho won the Idaten Battle, Germ Man and his Germ Men were vanquished.

MTB

• Flame Kaiser (フレイムカイザー): Sho Yamato’s MTB. Although Sho and his father have built Flame Kaiser before entering X-Zone, the MTB is regarded as a legend in X-Zone. He can move faster with its special attack, and is later shown to be capable of flight after being knocked off a building by Gabu. Sometimes, the powerful energies surrounding Sho and Flame Kaiser can take the form of a phoenix.
• Neptune (ネプチューン) / Neptune Emperor – Makoto Shido’s MTB. Can ride through water with greater speed than a normal MTB going through land. Sometimes, the powerful energies surrounding Mokoto and Neptune Emperor can take the form of a dolphin when on water.
• Thunder Emperor (サンダーエンペラー) / Thunder King: Kyoichi Shido’s MTB.
• Bloody Fang (ブラッディファング) / Poison Fang: Gabu Samejima’s MTB. its strongest attack is Poison Impact, which creates a red shockwave powerful enough to destroy concrete buildings around him, literally blowing Gabu’s competition away. Sometimes, the powerful energies surrounding Gabu and Bloody Fang can take the form of a wolf.
• Aero Scissors (エアロシザース): Koei’s MTB. its strongest attack is Ninjitsu Hurricane which is used to blow away the competition. Sometimes, the powerful energies surrounding Koei and Aero Scissors can take form of a fox.
• Hammer Head (ハンマーヘッド) / Iron Hammer : Arthur’s MTB. The Iron Hammer Crush attack has the power to break throgh solid objects and gives Arthur more gripping power.
• Terry’s Junior Giant (?): Terry the Megaton’s MTB. It is a 3-wheel MTB with 2 wheels on front axle that can trap a biker ahead of him.
• Imperial X (インペリアルX): It was built by the ancients. Imperial X gives peace to X-City. When it was broken, Sho’s father had to fix it. Zentaro’s Imperial X blueprint revealed that it can reach top speed on any terrain. It is said to even create racing terrains. When Takeru rode it under the influence of an ancient evil, its attack is Even’s Destruction.
• Imperial Dragon (インペリアルDG(ドラゴン)): Ayumu Yamato’s MTB. A miniature version of Imperial X, it appeared after the match between Sho Yamato and the X-Zone Police Captain (who was under the control of Team X at the time), before Sho and the others returned to the X-Zone.
• Imperial Tiger (インペリアルタイガー?): An MTB riden by a Kyoichi Shido while he was being controlled by Team X. After Sho had defeated Kyoichi, Imperial Tiger had also been used by Sho to train for the ultimate technique after losing the Flame Kaiser platinum emblum to his father.
• Bacteria Baron: Germ Man’s MTB.
• Defense Bike: Team X’s autonomous black MTB guarding Imperial Island.

Emblems

Each gold emblem is worth 10 silver emblems, while a platinum emblem is worth 3 gold emblems.

The Dark Emblem appears after Sho has returned to X-Zone, which is used by Team X to control MTB Riders. It can apparently control any living creature (or at least owls in Hosuke’s case) also.

Plot

Jimmy Kudo, a 17-year-old high school prodigy and detective who frequently worked with the police, was attacked by two members of a mysterious crime syndicate while investigating a case regarding blackmail. He was then forced to take a newly developed experimental poison that was supposed to kill him, but due to a rare side-effect unknown to the two men, the drug transformed his body back into that of his seven-year-old self instead, after they left him for dead. In order to hide his identity and investigate the whereabouts of the syndicate, which he later finds out is called the Black Organization, he adopts the pseudonym Conan Edogawa. To search for leads to the syndicate, he manages to move in with his childhood friend Rachel Moore, whose father Richard Moore works as a private investigator. He also enrolls at Teitan elementary school and forms the Junior Detective League with three other children in his class; Amy, Mitch, and George. Even as Conan, Jimmy continues solving criminal cases, usually posing as Richard Moore with the help of special gadgets, invented by a friend of his parents who is a scientist. Richard Moore, a rather inept detective, is bewildered at the sudden rise in his case-solving abilities, but does not question this as he is more than glad about his subsequent rise in fame.

Later in the series, another main character, Anita Hailey, appears. A former member of the Black Organization, codenamed “Sherry”, she is actually Shiho Miyano, a gifted chemist who developed the poison APTX 4869 which turned Jimmy back into a child. After her sister was brutally murdered by members of the Black Organization, she tried to get out and was held captive. She then attempted to commit suicide by taking a dose of APTX 4869, but instead was transformed into a child as well, and managed to escape from them. She then enrolled in Conan’s school under the pseudonym Anita Hailey. She knows Conan’s true identity and helps him in his quest to bring down the Black Organization.

Later on, Conan becomes involved with the American FBI, and they are able to capture Kir, a member of the Black Organization. Kir is later revealed to be an undercover CIA agent, and promises to relay information about the Black Organization to the FBI. They return Kir to the organization. Later, she tells the FBI that the Black Organization has a new member codenamed Bourbon

Protagonist

[edit] Jimmy Kudo

Jimmy Kudo known as Shinichi Kudo (工藤 新一, Kudo Shinichi^?) in Japan, is the protagonist of the series. Jimmy is a brilliant high school detective who often solves difficult cases for the police. After getting in over his head with a certain case, he is attacked and forced to take an experimental poison by a member of a mysterious secret crime organization that he was investigating. The drug was supposed to kill him, but due to a rare side-effect, he was inadvertently shrunk back to his childhood body. In order to keep his true identity a secret, he now goes under the alias Conan Edogawa (江戸川 コナン, Edogawa Konan^?) and pretends to be a real child to throw off suspicion while he secretly solves many cases and looks for clues about the organization. He fears the organization will come back and kill him and everyone he knows if it is discovered that he isn’t really dead. He also has always had a crush on his childhood friend, Rachel Moore who he is openly in love with but cannot reveal his feelings to in his current condition. Before he was shrunk, Jimmy was a popular detective, a great soccer player, and was sometimes a bit full of himself before he became “Conan”. His two seiyū are Kappei Yamaguchi for Jimmy and Minami Takayama for Conan. He is voiced by Jerry Jewell for Jimmy and Alison Viktorin for Conan. In the TV Drama he was portrayed by Shun Oguri in teenage form and Nao Fujisaki in child form.

Rachel Moore known as Ran Mouri (毛利 蘭, Mōri Ran^?) in Japan, is Jimmy’s best friend since elementary school. Both are in love with one another but neither have the courage to admit their feelings. She is skilled in martial arts and is the captain of her karate team, though her resolve can be easily broken if she has to face anything related with the horror genre. She spends most of her home life looking after Conan and her irresponsible father. Her seiyū is Wakana Yamazaki and her English voice actress is Colleen Clinkenbeard. In the live drama, she was portrayed by Tomoka Kurokawa.

Richard Moore known as Kogoro Mouri (毛利 小五郎, Mōri Kogorō^?) in Japan is Rachel’s father, a former police officer turned incompetent private detective. He was married to Eva Kadan, a successful lawyer and childhood friend, but now they are living separately. Despite his irresponsible ways, he appears to care deeply for his daughter, and at times shows some flashes of honor and strict ethics. His seiyū is Akira Kamiyaand his English voice actor is R. Bruce Elliot. Akira Kamiya has recently left the role of Richard and a replacement has not yet been announced.^[1] He was portrayed by Takanori Jinnai in the live drama.

Gin (ジン, Gin^?), known in the localized manga as Melkior but is later refered to as Gin, is one of the top-ranked members in the BO, as well as the person who gave the APTX 4869 poison to Jimmy. He is extremely cold-blooded and one of the most menacingly-drawn villains. He is also extremely perceptive, and as such it would be extremely difficult to catch him. His seiyū is Yukitoshi Hori and his English voice actor is Troy Baker. He was portrayed by Sasaki Kuranosuke in the live drama.

Vodka (ウォッカ, Vodka^?) is a member of the BO, who is usually seen alongside Gin, whom he refers to as aniki (“older brother”). Unlike Gin, Vodka is very slow and easy to trick and, as such, would have been caught many times if he didn’t stay with Gin so often. He is originally called Kaspar in the manga, but it is later changed to Vodka. His seiyū is Fumihiko Tachiki and his English voice actor is Kyle Herbert. He was portrayed by Taro Okada in the live drama.

Vermouth is an important member of the Black Organization. Her true identity is Sharon Vineyard, a famous American actress who mastered the skill of disguise alongside her friend Yukiko (Vivian) Kudo, Jimmy’s mother. They were both tutored through an acting class by the world famous magician, Toichi Kuroba, (who was secretly the original Kaitou Kid and who was later killed by an underground organization, though it has not been confirmed in the series to have been the B.O.).

Vermouth is the Boss’s favorite member of the organization, and she is shrouded with mystery. The cold-blooded part of her personality doesn’t hesitate to carry out the B.O.’s top orders in the forms of murders and so forth, without the slightest bit of remorse. However, she shows affection for both Shinichi (Jimmy) and Ran (Rachel) after they unknowingly save her life as she is disguised as a male serial killer in New York. She eventually realizes who Conan must really be later in the series, and supports him in a way, by protecting him and keeping his true identity hidden from the other B.O. members. She believes that if anyone is capable of bringing down the Black Organization, Conan/Jimmy is that “silver bullet”. She also does not seem to ever age, or ages extremely slowly. It is still a mystery as to why this is. She even goes to such lengths as to say she has a “daughter” named Chris Vineyard and she disguises herself as both “Sharon” and “Chris.” She is questioned about her agelessness by Jodie Starling, who has a personal vendetta against her. Jodie remembered that Vermouth killed her father, who was also an FBI agent, when she was just a little girl. Vermouth never gives her a straight answer. “Sharon” later supposedly dies, while “Chris” looks on at the funeral. Vermouth’s famous line is “A secret makes a woman, a woman.” Her seiyū is Mami Koyama.

[edit] Chianti

A member of the Black Organization who serves as an assassin/sniper and replaces Calvados. ^[2]. She appears in volume 48-49 of the manga and episode 425 alongside her partner, Korn. Chianti is first introduced to the Case Closed series in episode 425 as an experienced assassin. ^[2]. In the anime, her sniping range limit is revealed to be 600 yards, making her a less experienced sniper than her partner Korn, as well as her FBI rival, Shuichi Akai.^[2] Chianti hints that she had some kind of connection to Calvados before he killed himself, though it is unclear just what that may be. Along with Korn, Chianti does not appear to like Vermouth.
As far as appearance goes, Chianti takes on a goth-like style. ^[2] She wears a jumpsuit and dark lipstick, and has a dark tattoo resembling a butterfly’s wing on her left eye.^[2] In the anime, she speaks with a distinct accent, and unlike the other members (aside from her partner), she rarely smiles. However, she appears to have some sense of ironic humor, as proven in the beginning of episode 425 when she and Korn are practicing sniping and he misses.^[2] Her weapon of choice is a Heckler & Koch PSG1 sniper rifle, and she drives a blue and white Viper.^[2] Recently, she participated in a mission in bringing back Kir, which succeeded thanks to Gin. She was about to kill the FBI agent Andre Camel, but an explosion interfered. She is forced to flee with the other BO members when onlookers appeared and called the police. Her seiyū is Kikuko Inoue.

Chianti’s partner, and fellow assassin/sniper. He appears in episode 425 and volume 48-49 of the manga. He is much older than his comrades, always wears a dark hat and sunglasses, and always has a cold emotionless expression on his face. Unlike the other members of the Black Organization, he never smiles. He and Chianti both resent Vermouth because of Calvados’s death. His face is designed in a way that makes him look as if he is perpetually frowning, and he has gray hair and wrinkles. His seiyū is Hiroyuki Kinoshita.

The newest member of the Black Organization, first mentioned in File 622 as having incredible investigative skills. He is possibly Okiya Subaru as he does have investigative skills, is shown drinking bourbon, and Haibara suspects him to be an organization member also.

The mysterious leader of the Black Organization. Unseen and unheard, known only through text messages. This persons’ (his or her gender is unknown) phone number follows the tune of the children’s song “nanatsu-no-ko” (“7-year-old child”). No matter what the consequences are, the BO members follow this persons orders immediately and without questions, with the exception of Vermouth.^{[citation needed]}

Akemi Miyano (宮野明美, Miyano Akemi^?) was a member of the Black Organization under the alias Masami Hirota and Shiho Miyano’s older sister. She was also Shuichi Akai’s girlfriend which was the main reason she tried to escape from Black organization. She stole one billion yen to escape from the black organization but was killed by Gin. She’s also the one who knows Conan’s identity because Conan told her before she died. Her seiyū was Sakiko Tamagawa.^{[citation needed]}

Tequila is a tall intimidating member of the Black Organization that is used to muscle people into making deals with his syndicate.^[3] He apparently comes from Osaka since he is heard to speak with a Kansai accent.^[4] He first appears in Volume 12 of the manga where Conan literally bumps into him at a video game convention in a hotel.^[5] At first, Conan only dismisses him as being a game company employee when he sees him pick up a suitcase with a game company’s logo on it. He is a giant BO henchman towering above 6’5″ (195.6 cm). He is accidentally killed by a briefcase bomb. His seiyū was Kōsei Hirota and his English voice actor was Andrew Chandler.

A 56 year old politician and member of the Black Organization. He appeared in Volume 24 or episode 176, he was being indicted for taking bribes, but was killed by the Organization’s member Pisco so he wouldn’t talk.

Kenzo Masuyama, a 71-year-old car company owner and a high ranking member of the Black Organization. Appearing in Volume 24 or episode 176-178, he knew Ai’s parents, and her secret identity. However, Gin killed him for breaking the Organization’s code of secrecy after being caught on camera as he committed a murder. His seiyū was Yasuo Maramatsu.

Akemi and Shiho’s's father, he was a scientist for the Black Organization. He had been working on a primitive version of what would eventually become the APTX 4869 drug for the syndicate. He was described as “The Mad Scientist” by the scientific community, but Hiroshi Agasa remembered him as a kind and gentle man. He was killed in an “accident” when Shiho was very young.

Akemi and Shiho’s mother, she also worked for the Black Organization as a scientist. She was born in England, but fell in love with Atsushi and lived with him in Japan. In the organization, she was given the codename Hell Angel. She was remembered as a silent, shy woman. She died in what was believed to be an accident with her husband when Shiho was very young. On a case, Shiho discovered several audiotapes from her mother that were addressed to her.^[6]. Her seiyū was Hiroku Suzuki.

A member of the Black Organization who posed as a patient in hopes of tracking Rena Mizunashi; however, Conan and the FBI managed to find him out. He escaped the hospital, and Conan and Shuichi went after him, but he committed suicide for unknown reasons before they managed to get information. He is first properly introduced in volume 57 of the manga, however, he can be considered the mysterious man the boy who witnessed in the Kir Case informed that he had seen Rena Mizunashi. His seiyū is Mitsuo Iwata.

Cornelius Graver, known in Japan as Kichiro Numabuchi, is a hideously deformed killer who first appeared as the likely suspect in a murder spree in Osaka in Volume 19.^[7] Later, he turned out to have been employed by the Organization as an assassin, but he ultimately proved useless for them. He was going to be sent to Sherry’s lab to have the APTX 4869 tested on him, but he escaped. He then went into hiding, killing innocent people whom he believed to be Organization members sent to get him. His seiyū is Naoki Tatsuta,his English voice actor is Barry Yandell^[7]

Inspector Joseph Megure (JA, KO, ZH) known in Japan as Inspector Juzo Megure (目暮十三警部, Megure Jūzō-keibu^?), is a veteran police officer who has been working with Jimmy Kudo, Booker Kudo and Richard Moore. In fact, Richard used to work under him 10 years ago. He always wears his hat to hide an old scar which reminds him of a special case from 20 years ago, during his early police days which involved his then-future wife Midori. That time he was still a new police officer in charge of protecting Midori who planned to lure out a culprit who uses his car to run over high school girls with long skirts. Megure saved the girl’s life, at the cost of a scar on his head.^{[8] [9]} His seiyū is Chafurin and English voice actor is Mark Stoddard.

[edit] Miwako Sato

Miwako Sato (佐藤 美和子, Satō Miwako^?) is a young female officer who works with Megure. Her father was also a police officer who was killed on duty when she was only six years old. Her former partner Matsuda was killed in an explosion. She made her debut as a cameo appearance in Volume 19 of the manga or Episode 130 and was properly introduced in Volume 21 or Episode 146. Her seiyū is Atsuko Yuya.

Tough, energetic, and a dedicated police officer that her “dates” tend to turn into police investigations, but she also can be quite lively and cheerful. Sato is hugely popular with the male members of the police department, but to their chagrin she, albeit hesitantly, begins to develop feelings for her colleague Takagi. A running joke in the series is that their relationship never progresses because of interruptions by the rest of the police force. However, in chapter 673, she kissed Takagi when he was hospitalized, after Conan and the Detective Boys warded off Megure and some others who were about to enter. She has come to value Conan’s aid in several tough cases and trusts his judgment implicitly. She can tell he is no ordinary boy, and accepts him as a member of the police.

[edit] Harry Wilder

Harry Wilder, known in Japan as Wataru Takagi (高木 渉, Takagi Wataru^?), is an officer who works with Meguire and has feelings for his fellow officer Sato, which are somewhat awkwardly requited. He first appeared in the anime in episode 21/22(Lights… Camera… Murder), and made his first manga appearance in Volume 18 Chapter 171 – It Must be Similar. Strangely, for a time he had different hairstyles in different adaptions, smooth in the manga but slightly spiky in the anime, however his hair in the anime has more recently started looking like his manga counterpart’s. His last name, Takagi, is used as the first name in the English Manga. He was named after his seiyū Wataru Takagi. His English voice actor is Doug Burks.

Takagi has an appearance of ineffectual nervousness, but he’s not as useless as he seems. He is quick to assess a situation and take immediate and decisive action when necessary or when it points in his favor. Conan frequently asks Takagi to do favors for him during crime scene investigations and he usually does so without any question. Like Sato, he sees that Conan is extraordinarily smart and observant, and appears to suspect that Conan is not who he seems; This is seen when he makes close observations of Conan in certain investigations, especially at the end of Volume 36 or Episode 304 when he and Conan get perilously trapped in an elevator together, resulting in Conan being forced to defuse a time bomb in his presence. Officer Isshin Chiba (千葉一伸, Isshin Chiba^?) is Takagi’s partner who likes to eat a lot. He’s nice and very encouraging towards his friend. He made his debut in the fourth Detective Conan movie, then as a cameo appearance in Volume 29 of the manga and was properly introduced in Volume 32. Later in the series it’s revealed he is a fan of the children’s show Kamen Yaiba.

Ninzaburo Santos, known in Japan as Ninzaburo Shiratori (白鳥 任三郎, Shiratori Ninzaburō^?), is another officer who works with Meguire and likes Sato; however, she does not feel the same about him. He made his first appearance in the first Detective Conan movie and his manga appearance was in Volume 21, along with Officer Sato. Later in the series he makes overt advances towards Miwako, relying heavily on his status as the scion of a wealthy family (and doing his best to make the shy and awkward Takagi feel inferior in the process). However, after meeting Conan’s elementary school teacher, Sumiko Kobayashi, he has stopped pursuing Officer Sato. He is known to have good knowledge on wine. His seiyū was Kaneto Shiozawa and is now Kazuhiko Inoue. His English voice actor is Eric Vale.

Kiyonaga Mclaughlin, known in Japan as Kiyonaga Matsumoto (松本 清長, Matsumoto Kiyonaga^?), is the superior officer of Joseph Meguire and his underlings. His brutish appearance and the scar running down his left eye easily hide the fact that he is a caring, if somewhat stern, father figure. He is widowed and has a single daughter, Sayuri Matsumoto / Catherine McLaughlin, who used to be Jimmy’s, Rachel’s, and Serena’s music teacher in middle school. He received the scar on his face during a confrontation with a serial killer 20 years prior to the series. His seiyū is Seizo Katou and his English voice actor is Bob Carter.

Jinpei Matsuda (松田 陣平, Matsuda Jinpei^?) is Miwako’s parter who died while trying to stop a bomb from exploding. He chose to stay inside a Ferris wheel ride with a bomb because a message came that another bomb’s location would be displayed on the casing three seconds before the explosion. He originally meant to redeem his partner Hagiwara, who died four years before in a related incident, but was unable to succeed. Miwako was partnered with him for less than a week, but his intense personality and subsequent death left a huge and lasting impact on her for years to come. Judging from her reactions to him shortly before he died, it is believed Sato was starting to fall in love with him. She has now carried the love on to Inspector Takagi, though she is reluctant to admit it. His character design is based on that of the famous Japanese actor Yusaku Matsuda. His seiyū is Canna Nobutoshi.

Yumi Miyamoto (宮本 由美, Miyamoto Yumi^?) is a traffic officer and Inspector Sato’s best friend. She is a gossip who knows about Takagi’s crush on Sato and, while often teasing the two about their relationship, she tries her best to help them get underway. Yumi is also quite attractive and popular in her own way, and she owns two dogs named Suta and Hachi. She is also allergic to cats. Her seiyū is Yuu Sugimoto.

Mace Fuller, known in Japan as Ginzo Nakamori (中森 銀三, Nakamori Ginzō^?), is the inspector who is the head of the Phantom Thief Kid Task force, and can never quite catch him. He is known for his colorful, loud curses and temperamental demeanor. He mistakenly believes that the current Kaito Kid is the one that he started chasing after more than 20 years ago. He is unaware however, that the best friend of his daughter, Aoko, is the current Kaito Kid. He appears in the manga Magic Kaito as well. Martin Hartwell, known in Japan as Heizo Hattori (服部 平蔵, Hattori Heizō^?), is Harley’s father is the chief commissioner of the Osaka police department. While a very serious and stern police officer and family man, he has come to admire his son’s abilities, though he rarely shows. His seiyū is Takehiro Koyama and his English voice actor is Andrew Chandler.

Detective Worthington (横溝 参悟, Yokomizo Sango^?) is a stern-looking police inspector from Saitama who later he transfers to Shizuoka whom Conan has run into on several occasions. He is a serious and capable police officer, though he tends to be skeptical about theories and to intimidate suspects by moving up close and staring at them. He made his first appearance in the Case Closed Volume 6. His seiyū is Akio Ohtsuka and his English voice actor is Dameon Clarke.

Inspector Jugo (横溝 重悟, Yokomizo Jugo^?) is the twin brother of Detective Yokomizo Worthington who works at the Kanagawa police department. As intimidating as his older brother, he is much neater and less easy-going, which does not make him particularly popular with the people he encounters. His seiyū is Akio Ohtsuka, the same for Worthington.

Misao Yamamura (山村 ミサオ, Yamamura Misao^?) is a young police officer from the Gunma Prefecture. Thanks to watching too much TV, he is very enthusiastic about his work, but is totally naive, bumbling and child-headed, and thus totally unsuited for the job. The first reaction of Conan and all who know him whenever they happen to encounter him is exasperation, but once set on the right track he is very supportive. His grandmother, Nonna Yamamura (山村 ばあちゃん, Yamamura Nonna^?), made an appearance in manga volume 52. He often tries to catch the deduction shows of Sleeping Kogoro on film but messes up frequently. The first time he forgot to press record and the second time he paused it and never restarted. He also tries to make logical deductions to impress Kogoro however most of the time either Kogoro is not there or Kogoro says that it is not a murder, but a suicide. He is often yelled at for wanting the cases involving Kogoro to be murders so he can have the chance to record the deduction show. His seiyū is Toshio Furukawa. But now, he is a police inspector only due to the time when Conan put him to sleep and used him for the deduction show.

Inspector Kansuke Yamato (大和 敢助, Yamato Kansuke^?) is a Police officer from Nagano Prefecture with a prominent pair of criss-crossed scars over his blinded left eye. He walks with a crutch on his left arm. His first appearance in manga volume 59. In the same case, it was revealed he sustained those injuries during his disappearance for six months previously, while pursuing some criminals. His name seemed to have been inspired by Yamamoto Kansuke (山本 勘助^?), a brilliant strategist and advisor of Takeda Shingen (武田信玄^?), a background character in the case. Yamamoto Kansuke was also disabled in one eye and one leg. Kansuke is also a childhood friend of Yui Euhara (上原 由衣, Uehara Yui^?), as well as her superior in the Nagano police. They were very close, but when he was presumed dead during his disappearance, she resigned and took it upon herself to marry into the Torada (虎田^?) family to investigate the death of another well-loved colleague.

An middle-aged officer that Conan usually refers to as “Tome-San”. He first appears in episode 51, and makes minor reocurring appearances investigating the crime scene. Conan usually gets information from him when trying to solve a case. Like the lawyer Reiko Kujo, he is another anime only character who makes several appearances throughout the series, however, his appearance has highly increased during the progression of the series, including appearing in movie 9.

[edit] Jodie Starling

Jodie Starling appeared in episode 226 as Rachel’s English teacher under the name of Jodie Saintemillion. For a long time she was suspected by Conan’s friends to be Vermouth in disguise, and even investigated by Conan and Harley on these suspicions in episodes 277-278, but is later revealed to be an FBI Agent in episode 345. She has a personal vendetta against Vermouth concerning the death of her father. She likes to call Conan “cool kid” but does not know his secret as she asks Vermouth （who knows Conan’s identity) the reason she called him “cool guy” instead of “kid”. Her name is a reference to Agent Clarice Starling from The Silence of the Lambs, played by actress Jodie Foster.^{[citation needed]} Her seiyū is Miyuki Ichijou.

Shuichi Akai (赤井 秀一, Akai Shūichi^?) First appeared in episode 230-231 as a mysterious man spying on Conan. He is later revealed to be an FBI agent and Jodie’s partner.^[10] He joined the Black Organization, codename: Rye, to spy on them but was found out. He is also the boyfriend of Miyano Akemi, the deceased sister of Haibara Ai. Gin refers to him as a very dangerous man after Vermouth informs him about her encounter with Conan and the FBI agents. The Boss says to Vermouth that he could be the “Silver Bullet”. Shuichi wants revenge on the Black Organization after the death of Akemi. He is called out by Mizunashi Rena (Kir) and when confronting Kir, he is shot and presumably killed in the explosion that followed. Recently, someone with a burn mark on his face and a huge resemblance to Shuichi has been seen. His seiyū is Shuuichi Ikeda.

Shuichi tends to be bold and plots most of the schemes for the FBI. He is occasionally seen coconspiring with Conan and does not question his detective abilities. It is also believed that he knows Haibara’s true identity. Shuichi is good at driving and handling guns.

A high ranking FBI Agent who works with Shuichi and Jodie. He first appears in episode 258, mistaken for a celebrity whom he resembles. His seiyū is Iemasa Kayumi.

A new FBI introduced in Chapter 600 of the manga, and episode 497 of the anime. He works as Jodie’s partner, and at first, both Jodie and Conan were very suspicious of him. He and Shu’ichi appear to have somewhat of an alliance. It is revealed that he feels as though he owes Shu’ichi because he’s the one who blew his cover while working as an undercover BO member, thus, getting his girlfriend Akemi killed. His seiyū is Kiyoyuki Yanada.

Ethan Hondou (本堂 イーサン^?) a deceased and a hard-boiled CIA agent. He is Hidemi and Eisuke’s father, He was originally thought by Conan and friends to have been a member of the Black Organization, but it turned out he had infiltrated them for the purposes of destroying them. When he and his daughter put a plan in motion to place a new CIA agent within the organization (her), Ethan noticed that the syndicate had bugged Hidemi’s clothes. To protect his daughter, Ethan was forced to injure Hidemi and kill himself – making it look like he had interrogated her and she had killed him. His seiyū is Rikiya Koyama.

[edit] Eisuke Hondou

Eisuke Hondou (本堂 瑛祐, Hondō Eisuke^?) is Rachel’s very clumsy (or bad-lucked, as he claims) new classmate. At first, Conan suspects he works for the Black Organization because not only does he look a lot like Rena Mizunashi, but he uses the same lie-detecting skills as she did. Conan is the only one having second thoughts about Eisuke; the others think that he’s just a smart misguided student. Eisuke becomes an increasingly suspicious character as he begins looking for his sister, who looks almost identical to Rena Mizunashi; however, Eisuke insists that it is not Rena due to a clip they had watched. In the clip it showed Mizunashi Rena saying her bloodtype was AB when he was type O, and years before his sister had given him blood. It is revealed that he had to undergo surgery for leukemia and his sister donated her bone marrow, which in turn turned his blood from type O to AB.

However, his lie is revealed when he tracks down Kir/Rena to the hospital where she is hidden by the FBI, where it is revealed that Kir/Rena is indeed Eisuke’s sister, and an undercover CIA agent. It is also revealed that Eisuke is the son of a deceased CIA agent, Ethan Hondou. The FBI offers him protection, but he refuses it.

Currently, he intends to move to America to join the CIA like his sister and father. In episode 464, Eisuke tries to dig for information on how Richard Moore figures out his cases, and Conan mentally notes that Eisuke may be a threat to his secret identity. This thought becomes reality when Eisuke later tricks him by telling Conan that he is in love with Ran, provoking Conan to reveal his identity. His seiyū is Junko Noda.

[edit] Hidemi Hondou

Hidemi Hondou (本堂 瑛海, Hondō Hidemi^?) is Eisuke Hondou’s sister. She was originally introduced as a newscaster under the name Rena Mizunashi. Hidemi Hondou also serves as a member of the Black Organization under the codename Kir^[11]. She is later knocked into a coma and detained by FBI agents after being involved in a traffic accident. It is revealed that her name is most likely an alias that refers to “007″. She later wakes up and it is ultimately revealed that she is an undercover CIA agent, working as a double agent within the Black Organization, trying to bring them down. The FBI manage to trick the Black Organization to take her in again. To prove her loyalty, she was ordered to kill Shuichi Akai. Under heavy surveillance, she reports information to Jodie Starling. Her seiyū is Kotono Mitsuishi.

The Junior Detective League, known as Detective Boys (少年探偵団, Shōnen Tantei-dan^?) in Japan, are a group consisting of Conan Edogawa, Amy Yeager, Mitch Tennison, George Kaminski, and Anita Hailey. Professor Agasa often looks over the kids and assist them when a case needs to be solved. As a symbol of the group, each member has a badge used as a walkie talkie and a tracer.

Amy Yeager, known as Ayumi Yoshida (吉田歩美, Yoshida Ayumi^?) in Japan, is Conan’s friend and classmate. Amy was the sole female member of the Junior Detective League until they got Anita Hailey to join. She has a crush on Conan, which makes him uncomfortable, though Amy thinks that he loves Anita because he tries to protect her and she often sees them talk amongst themselves in private. She is a naive and innocent little girl who shows courage from time to time and acts as the team’s cheerful spirit. Amy later becomes better friends with Ai, and in the Japanese version, Ai allows Amy to use the more informal term Ai-”chan” to address her.^[12] In the English Manga, her name is translated to Amy Yoshida. Her seiyū is Yukiko Iwai and her English voice actress is Monica Rial.

Mitch, known as Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya (円谷光彦, Tsuburaya Mitsuhiko^?) in Japan, is a friend of Amy and George who enjoys reading science books and takes a scientific approach to problem solving. He seems to be infatuated with both Amy and Anita Hailey. He is a smart and well-read first-grader who believes that technology can solve most problems. It was shown that his parents are both teachers, and he has an older sister, Asami Tsuburaya (円谷 朝美, Tsuburaya Asami^?), two years his senior.^[13] In the English Manga, his name is translated to Mitch Tsuburaya. His seiyū is Ikue Ohtani and his English voice actor is Cynthia Cranz. He was temporarily voiced by Orikasa Ai in the 10th movie.

George, also known as Genta Kojima (小嶋元太, Kojima Genta^?) in Japan, is the overweight, self-proclaimed leader of the Junior Detective League. He loves food and can eat more than all the other Junior Detective League members combined. His favorite food is eel rice. Even though he can be intimidating, he is actually very kind. He is a friend of Amy and Mitch, and has been shown to admire his father, who owns a liquor store. Both he and Mitch have a crush on Amy, and they both envy Conan since she likes him. In the English Manga, his name is translated to George Kojima. His seiyū is Wataru Takagi and his English voice actor was Dameon Clarke and currently Mike McFarland.

Shiho Miyano (宮野志保, Miyano Shiho^?) was a former member of the Black Organization under the code name “Sherry” (シェリー, Sherry^?). A gifted chemist at a young age, she was the inventor of APTX 4869, the poison that shrank Jimmy. Shiho betrays the organization after Gin killed her sister, Akemi Miyano. Shiho took the drug in a suicide attempt, but rather than dying, she, like Jimmy, became small. She is taken in by Dr. Agasa and becomes Conan Edogawa’s right hand under her alias Anita Hailey, known in Japan as Haibara Ai (灰原哀, Ai Haibara^?). She shows affection towards Jimmy, but she denies having said feelings. Despite being constantly in the company of the Junior Detective League and Ran, she was very reserved and only opened up a little more to Amy and Rachel after sometime. In Episode 330, she allowed only Ayumi to call her “Ai-chan”. She often helps Conan solve cases and find information on the Black Organization to help bring them down in addition to working on the cure to their condition. Her seiyū is Megumi Hayashibara and her English voice actor is Brina Palencia. In the live drama, her teenage form was portrayed by Yuu Kashii and her child form was by Shibota Kyota.

Hershel Agasa, known in Japan as Hiroshi Agasa (阿笠 博士, Agasa Hiroshi^?), is an absent-minded professor who invents several devices to help Jimmy out. His given name is Hiroshi in the English manga and Herschel in the English anime. He serves as one of the few roles in the story who learns about Conan’s true identity and helps the little detective in cases. He often takes care of the Junior Detective League and takes them on trips in his old VW Beetle. He lets Ai Haibara live with him when he finds her collapsed on the street. His seiyū is Kenichi Ogata and his English voice actor is Bill Flynn.

Serena Sebastian, known in Japan as Sonoko Suzuki (鈴木 園子, Suzuki Sonoko^?), is Rachel’s best friend. Serena comes from a wealthy family with a high social status though she does not show any. She is a typical, social girl, and is usually chasing after and flirting with attractive boys. Her current boyfriend is Makoto Kyougoku, a promising martial artist whom she maintains a long distance relationship with. She admits she wants Kaito Kid and Makoto to become candidates to be her boyfriend. Sonoko’s last name in the English manga is Sebastian. Her sister is named Ayako Suzuki /Ayako Sebastian (Viz) or Angie Sebastian (Funimation). She thinks Jimmy is a loser for leaving Rachel alone and is always trying to set Rachel up on dates with new guys, but she continues to call Ran and Shinchi boyfriend and girlfriend/husband and wife. She constantly teases Ran about Shinchi being away and how much she wants Shinchi back. Her seiyū is Naoko Matsui and her English voice actress is Laura Bailey.

Harley Hartwell, known in Japan as Heiji Hattori (服部 平次, Hattori Heiji^?), is Jimmy’s rival detective from Osaka and his father is the chief of the Osaka police department. He later becomes friends with Jimmy/Conan after he discovers his secret.^[14] He has a relationship with Kazuha Toyama, his childhood friend and would-be love interest, similar in the case of Jimmy and Rachel. He persistently builds friendship with Conan/Jimmy despite Jimmy’s seeming disinterest, because they share the same goals of becoming greatest detectives and Jimmy is the only person he finds in his age group that can rival his deduction skills, and often helps in hiding Conan’s secret (though occasionally he suffers a slip of tongue). Harley is also a master Kendo fighter. Unlike Jimmy, his favorite author is Ellery Queen rather than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote Sherlock Holmes. His seiyū is Ryo Horikawa and his English voice actor is Kevin M. Connolly.

Kirsten Thomas, known in Japan as Kazuha Toyama (遠山和葉, Tōyama Kazuha^?), is Harley’s childhood friend and a daughter of a commissioner who is positioned high in the Osaka police department. Harley and Kirsten’s fathers are close friends. Her relationship with Harley closely mirrors Rachel’s with Jimmy; she is too shy to admit that they feel more than ‘friendship’ for their respective partner. She and Harley share a pouch with broken handcuffs which is their good luck charm. She forms a close bond with Ran after her initial jealousy. She is skilled in Aikido. This is similar to Rachel who is skilled in karate. Also both of them are scared of ghosts because “karate and aikido won’t work on them.” Her seiyū is Yuko Miyamura and her English voice actress is Gwendolyn Lau. In the collectible card game, her name was Katie Thomas, and in Case Closed: The Mirapolis Investigation her name is given as Katrina Tolliver.

Makoto Kyogoku (京極 真, Kyōgoku Makoto^?) is Serena’s boyfriend, and the karate champion of Haido High School; his skills are up to the point where he can take on a gang of fifty sword armed men.^[15] He first appears in episode 153, and is a suspect during a case where Serena is a target for a killer. He saves Serena from the real killer, however, and hints that he is actually attracted to her. In his own way, he can be considered a valuable ally because of his Karate skills. Because of his participation in several tournaments inland and overseas, and a well-hidden shyness towards Sonoko, they do not get to see each other often. Although he is regarded by Conan as a brainless fighting champion, he saves him along with Rachel and Serena many times by stumbling through the moronic clues left by Serena, which was originally made to find her and have one of her romantic fantasies come true. He also reminds Sonoko not to dress inappropriately for weather and to not attract criminals. His seiyū is Nobuyuki Hiyama.

Booker, known in Japan as Yusaku Kudo (工藤 優作, Kudo Yusaku^?), is Shinichi’s father. He is a famous author of detective stories^[16], and he created the popular character, “Knight Baron.” He is extremely intelligent, and often had helped the police many times in the past solve cases that no one else could solve. His deduction skills are often superior to Shinichi’s.^[17][18] He was the one who created the name Phantom Thief Kid from Phantom Thief 1412.^[19]. It was even hinted that he may have known Toichi Kuroba was the Phantom Thief Kid he was facing.^[20]. He and Vivian moved to Los Angeles to pursue their careers leaving Shinichi behind in Japan. His seiyū is Hideyuki Tanaka and his English voice actor is Randy Tallman.

Vivian, known in Japan as Yukiko Kudo (工藤 有希子, Kudō Yukiko^?), is Shinichi’s mother. She was a former actress who gave up her career at age 20 to marry Booker against the will of her family^[21]. She had been a rival of Eva Kadan in her high school years, and tied with Eva at the last Miss Titan beauty contest that was held at their school.^[22] It is later revealed that due to Richard’s poor English comprehension, he had failed to submit his vote to break the tie.^[23] Because of her reputation as the wife of a famous mystery author and for involving herself in some criminal cases which she occasionally helps to solve, she has been given the nickname, “The Night Baroness”^[24][25] after the main character that her husband created for his mystery novels. Despite all this, she is free-spirited and often acts childish, much to Jimmy’s chagrin. She occasionally shows up in Japan to see her son and to track particularly interesting cases at the request of her husband. Her seiyū is Sumi Shimamoto and her English voice actress is Laurie Steele.

Eva Kaden, known in Japan as Eri Kisaki (妃 英里, Kisaki Eri^?), is Rachel’s big-shot lawyer mother that has been separated with Richard Moore for the last ten years. She is known as “Queen” in the legal world. She still wears her wedding band and still cares for him and is not above testing if he still cares for her. Her seiyū was Gara Takashima and her English voice actress is Julie Mayfield.

[edit] Phantom Thief Kid

Phantom Thief Kid (怪盗キッド, Kaitō Kiddo^?) is a male teenager who looks a lot like Jimmy. He also has a best friend named Aoko Nakamori, who looks a lot like Rachel. Despite the fact that Jimmy does not care much about investigating thefts, Kid draws his attention by being an uncatchable magician. Curiously, in the anime, Kaitou discovers Conan’s true identity, but keeps his secret, and sometimes Jimmy can even count on Kid’s help to solve some of his cases. His codename in the police department is ‘International Criminal 1412′. Kaitou Kid appears in his own manga series, Magic Kaito as well. The original Kaitou Kid (8 years prior to the start of the story) focused on mostly stealing antiques and high-valued art. However, he was murdered, and his son takes over for him by continuing in his guise, stealing mostly jewels with strange histories in order to find his father’s killers and lure them out. He is a noble thief at heart. He is also able to charm women into an infatuated state. His seiyū is Kappei Yamaguchi and his English voice actor is Jerry Jewell.

Saguru Hakuba (白馬探, Hakuba Saguru^?) is a famous high school detective based outside Japan, he is a character originally from the Magic Kaito series. He is the son of a high police official. He is Kaito’s love rival for Aoko. He also attempts to catch the Phantom Thief Kid. Saguru believes that Kaito might be the Kaito Kid, but can never prove it. Sagura has also made appearances in the anime and manga of Case Closed, though there are times Kaito uses him as a disguise. In one of his Case Closed appearances, he appears with a pet falcon named Watson. His opinion of Heiji is very low, calling him rash and irresponsible; an example would be in the Lavender Re-Murder case, where he presumed there were holes in the window and that Heiji broke it down in a rush,however this also caused Conan to correct Saguru by saying that Heiji was not irresponsible, just hot-blooded. This lead Hakuba to the wrong criminal. His seiyū is Akira Ishida.

Tomoaki Araide

Tomoaki Araide (新出　智明, Araide Tomoaki^?) is a young doctor and the son of Richard’s physician. He was once the basketball coach on Rachel’s school and, upon their first encounter, thought to be a rival for Jimmy affections for Rachel. While Tomoaki had practised along with his father, he intended to move to Aomori for a job at a local clinic, along with his grandmother Mitsu Araide and his household helper Hikaru Yasumoto, especially after his father had been murdered by his stepmother Yoko for driving his actual mother (and Yoko’s friend), Chiaki, into alcoholism and eventual death. However, he has reappeared in Conan’s vicinity on several occasions – seemingly at least; his identity was used by Vermouth in order to track down Ai aka Sherry. He was almost murdered by her to facilitate the cover, but the FBI had temporarily moved him to safety in America. After Vermouth’s disguise was exposed, he returned as of volume #44 to Titan High School and continues to practise in the area. His seiyū is Hideyuki Hori.

Hikaru Yasumoto

Hikaru Yasumoto (保本 ひかる, Yasumoto Hikaru^?) is the young household keeper to Dr. Tomoaki Araide. She tends to be overly nervous about her chores, mostly because of the possibility that she may have a crush on her young employer who once was her doctor and therefore is too anxious about having to leave him. Her seiyū is Akiko Hiramatsu.

Liz Faulkner

Liz Faulkner,known in Japan as Sumiko Kobayashi (小林 澄子, Kobayashi Sumiko^?), is (as of Vol.16) the Detective Boys’ class teacher. Actually a kind person, in her initial period at Titan Elementary she was known as “the witch” due to her harsh behaviour to her students, which was in fact prompted by previous bad experience and her innate stage fright. With the help of Conan and his little friends she has warmed considerably, and after having seen the Detective Boys in action she has even appointed herself as their manager. Incidentally, Ms. Faulkner is a huge fan of detective story writer Rampo Edogawa – the author whose surname Jimmy had adopted for his alias; as yet, she has not guessed at that connection between the two. When she wears contacts, she looks like officer Sato. It’s revealed later that she had a past childhood encounter with Officer Santos involving sakura flowers. Her seiyū is Yuko Kato, her English voice actor is Stephanie Young.

Subaru Okiya

Subaru Okiya (沖矢　昴, Okiya Subaru^?) was introduced in file 622 as a nameless suspect of burning down an apartment. His appearance is that of a young blond haired man with glasses. He is currently staying in Jimmy’s house with his permission after his apartment burned down. He is a graduate student concentrating on engineering with deduction skills equal to that of high school detectives shown so far. Subaru was once seen drinking some creates speculation of his role as Bourbon. Sherry also senses the Black Organization stare from Okiya but it disappears as quickly as it comes. In Haibara’s eyes he is a man to keep close watch on. The only reason he has avoided suspicion from Conan is because Subaru is a Holmes fan. His seiyū is Ryotaro Okiayu.

Yoko Okino

Yoko Okino (沖野　ヨーコ, Okino Yōko^?) is a young pop star idol who is a regular focus of worship by Richard Moore. She has a number of cameos throughout the series, mostly as a prominent guest at some social gatherings which turn into criminal cases. Her seiyū is Miki Nagasawa and her English voice actress is Elise Baughman.

Azusa Enomoto

Azusa Enomoto (榎本 梓, Enomoto Azusa^?) is a young waitress at the Poirot Cafe, which Kogoro occasionally visits for a snack. She seems to have a knack of bringing some cases Richard’s (and therefore Conan’s) way. Her seiyū is Mikiko Enomoto.

Reiko Kujo

Reiko Kujo (九条 玲子, Kujō Reiko^?) is a public prosecutor, nicknamed “Madonna of the Courtroom”, who has appeared only in the anime.^[26] each concerning a courtroom case in which she is Eva Kadan‘s rival. She is replaced in episode 489 with another lawyer. It should be noted that she is one of the few only anime characters who has made a recurring appearance. Her seiyū is Rica Matsumoto.

Midori Meguire

Midori Meguire (目暮 みどり, Megure Midori^?) is the wife of Inspector Meguire.^[27] She first appears in episode 218. When she was a teenager, a string of serial killers was plaguing her neighborhood. Those targeted were young school girls. Believing the police where useless, she told Meguire (who was only a young officer at the time) that she was going to catch the killer on her own. She made herself an obvious target and the killer eventually attempted to run her over. She was saved by Inspector Meguire who was injured on his head. She was badly hurt and barely alive but she survived with only a scar on her forehead. Her seiyū is Ai Orikasa.

Jirokichi Suzuki

Jirokichi Suzuki (鈴木　次郎吉, Suzuki Jirōkichi^?), Serena’s uncle, is a glory-hounding, but for his age (in his 70ies) very fit and active industrial advisor for the Suzuki company. Ever since Kaito Kid stole his place on the paper’s front page, he is obsessed with catching Kid in order to raise his fame, only to be outdone by Conan every time instead.

Plot

The series is set after Japan’s conquest by the Holy Britannian Empire on August 10, 2010, a.t.b. with their powerful new robot weapons, the Knightmare Frames, stripping Japan and its citizens of all rights and freedoms and renaming the country Area 11. The titular Lelouch is a Britannian prince who was disowned by his father, Emperor Charles zi Britannia, after his mother was murdered, and has vowed to destroy his father, the Emperor, and Britannia. He gains an ability through the mysterious power of the Geass, becoming the leader of the resistance movement to fulfill his two wishes: to seek revenge for his mother and to construct a world in which his beloved sister Nunnally can live happily.

Setting

Code Geass is set in an alternate universe where three superpowers, the Holy Britannian Empire, the Chinese Federation, and the Euro Universe have divided up control of the world (with the exception of an independent Australia) and maintain a tentative balance for the first part of the series. The balance shifts in the second season as the E.U. has much of its territory conquered by Britannia while Lelouch engineers a revolution in the Chinese Federation and creates a new alliance of countries, the United Federation of Nations, reducing the number of superpowers to two.

Holy Britannian Empire

The Holy Britannian Empire (神聖ブリタニア帝国, Shinsei Buritania Teikoku^?) is an imperial monarchy and the most prominent superpower within the world of Code Geass, controlling over one-third of the world at the start of the series, based in North America with Pendragon as its imperial city. Britannian society is an aristocracy run according to a caricature of Social Darwinism, with a hierarchy of competing nobles at the top and the peoples of conquered territories (referred to either by their area number or as “Numbers”) living in poverty or as unequal Honorary Britannians.

During season one, the Britannian Empire controls the entire Western Hemisphere (both American continents), New Zealand, and recently conquered Japan, as well as the recently conquered “Area 18″^[7] in the Middle East region. During season two, Britannia successfully conquers about half of the rival “Euro Universe” superpower; taking over France, Spain, the western half of Africa, and Russia.^[8]

The series’ history diverges with Julius Caesar‘s invasion, with a Celtic “super-king” being elected (similar to the Arverni chieftain Vercingetorix), who successfully resisted the invasion and began the Britannian imperial line of absolute monarchy (referred to in the establishment of the Britannian calendar era, “Ascension Throne Britannia” (a.t.b) or the Imperial Calendar in the English dub, roughly fifty years earlier than the Gregorian calendar).

The English monarchy was then identical to our timeline until the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. However, in this world, she had an illegitimate son “Henry IX” who took the throne instead of the House of Stuart‘s James I. In its early nineteenth century, “Elizabeth III” died after losing the British Isles to Napoleon (and the capital moved to the American territories), and a new royal line was established by a prominent noble family. Japan

Japan is the source of over 70% of the world’s supply of the high energy mineral sakuradite. Britannia conquered it to gain control over that mineral. Japan was renamed Area 11 under Britannian rule. Through his alter-ego, Zero, Lelouch attempts to restore Japan’s independence as the “United States of Japan”, as a step in his quest to overthrow Britannia.

Chinese Federation

The Chinese Federation (中華連邦, Chūka Renpō^?) is an imperial monarchy that spans the Asian and Pacific regions, including Central, South, East, and Southeast Asia, with Sakhalin and the Korean Peninsula and is the most populous (and poverty-stricken) of the three superpowers.

Its political structure and organization appears to resemble the former Empire of China, with the Emperor regarded as a living divinity and holding absolute political power, though under Empress Tianzi, it has been reduced to a figurehead for the advisory “High Eunuchs” (大宦官, Dai Kangan^?) (similar to the feudal era Emperors of Japan). The Vermilion Forbidden City (朱禁城, Shu Kinjō^?) is the seat of the Chinese Emperor and the government of the Federation is a large palace situated in the capital city of Luoyang.

In the first season, the Chinese Federation attempts unsuccessfully to invade Japan on the pretext of “liberation” using exiled former Japanese officials. The resistance movement in India lends Zero’s Black Knights their lead weapons designer, Rakshata, in hopes that an independent Japan will in return aide them in gaining independence from China. In the second season, a Chinese consulate is established with the agreement of the local Britannian authorities and negotiations are held by Eunuch Gao Hai to the end of obtaining a solid Chinese foothold within the colony. After the Black Knights are exiled from Japan, they are granted control of Horai Island (蓬萊島^?), a fictional artificial land mass built off the coast of China to generate electricity through tidal activity. The Black Knights destabilize and overthrow the government, returning control to the Empress. Shortly after, the Federation collapses and its former member states are incorporated into the new United Federation of Nations.

Euro Universe

The Euro Universe (ユーロ・ユニバース, Yūro Yunibāsu^?), or E.U., is a democratic union encompassing all of Europe (including Great Britain), Africa, and Russia and long in conflict with Britannia. In the second season, Schneizel leads the Britannian forces against the E.U., successfully conquering almost half of their territory, including Portugal, Spain, France, half of Africa, and the whole of Russia.^[9] Following this, former member nations Italy, Austria, and Poland (among others) join the forty-seven founding nations of the United Federation of Nations, leaving only Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Ukraine, Belarus and an area of Africa near the Congo.

United Federation of Nations

Following the collapse of the E.U. and the uprising in the Chinese Federation, most of the remaining territories not under Britannian control join forces and form the United Federation of Nations, a new coalition to counter the Empire’s advance as the sole other superpower. The U.F.N. flag is a white dove with three circles merging at the point where the wings and body meet, over a yellow background.

The U.F.N. is composed of forty-seven countries spread across parts of Central and Eastern Europe, Eastern Africa, and the majority of the Asian continent. Decisions in the U.F.N. are determined by a two-thirds majority vote by the leaders of each country, with the population of each country determining their voting percentage. The individual armies of the member nations are abolished and replaced by a new supranational military force under the Black Knights’ control.

Geass

Geass (ギアス, giasu^?), also referred to as the Power of Kings (王の力, Ō no Chikara^?), is a mysterious ability which certain people can bestow upon others (the word itself potentially being an intentional corruption of geas or geis, a type of magical contract in Irish mythology). According to an English edition of Newtype, the power of Geass has something to do with the very existence of humankind and it may be used to destroy or transform just about anything.^[10] It is represented by a bird-shaped symbol which glows red when active.

A Geass is set as a contract between an immortal and a human who receives a unique power. It manifests in one eye, and with continued use increases in power, eventually becoming uncontrollable and spreading to both eyes. When a Geass is at full power, a person can then become a recipient of the immortal’s “Code”, that which grants them their power. This new immortal receives the Geass mark somewhere on their body, immunity to Geass, and the ability to make their own contracts with others, while the giver is allowed to die (perpetuating an endless cycle). This process is not necessarily consensual, as C.C. received her Code and V.V. had his taken away against their wills.

Every Geass power has its own unique set of both abilities and limitations (for example, Lelouch’s power can only be used once on a given person), allowing for their defeat or victory by someone who is aware of its characteristics. Further understanding of the power of Geass even leads to the development of a device that can undo its effects. All Geass abilities that have thus far appeared within canon of the television series have been related to the mind, influencing things such as emotion, perception, and memory.

Main characters

Lelouch Lamperouge

The title character and protagonist of the show, Lelouch Lamperouge is a seemingly ordinary 17-year-old student at Ashford Academy. In reality, he is Lelouch vi Britannia, the exiled son of the Emperor of Britannia and the late Empress Marianne, forced to flee to Japan after his mother’s assassination. When he gets caught up in a battle between the military and Japanese rebels, he gains the power of Geass, allowing him to force others to obey his orders without question, and begins a quest to utilize this power to destroy Britannia under another identity known as Zero.

Suzaku Kururugi

Lelouch’s childhood friend and son of Japan’s last prime minister, Genbu Kururugi. Suzaku is in the service of the Britannia Army as a soldier and chosen to test an experimental new model of Knightmare Frame, the Lancelot. Throughout the series, Suzaku shows a belief that achieving results by wrong or illegal methods is meaningless, setting up a rivalry with Zero.

C.C.

A mysterious green-haired girl who establishes a contract with Lelouch on the condition that he grant her one wish, passively overseeing Lelouch’s missions and occasionally helping them succeed to ensure he does not die.

Nunnally Lamperouge

Lelouch’s younger innocent sister, wheelchair-using and blind from her mother’s brutal assassination. Lelouch originally got involved with the war because he wanted to create a pleasant world for Nunnally.

Kallen Stadtfeld

A Britannian-Japanese who believes herself to be a Japanese person at heart and prefers her birth name, Kallen Kouzuki, over that of her father’s prestigious family. She maintains the image of a frail, outstanding student at Ashford Academy, all the while being a member of the Japanese resistance movement and one of Zero’s most devoted followers.

Knightmare Frames

Knightmare Frames are combat mecha, originally developed by the Britannian Empire and imitated by other nations as the series progresses, intended as a replacement for battle tanks and other conventional land, air, and sea warfare vehicles. The name is a play on the word “nightmare” and the Western image of a knight on a horse (mare), with “frame” being the civilian word for bipedal machines in general.

Production

Code Geass began as a concept developed at Sunrise by Ichirō Ōkouchi and Gorō Taniguchi, who proposed it to producer Yoshitaka Kawaguchi while they were working on Overman King Gainer and later Planetes.^[11] The initial concept of the plot consisted of a secret organization led by a “hero,” which was later developed into a conflict between two people with differing values of morality, belonging to the same military unit.^{[citation needed]}

During these early planning stages, Kawaguchi contacted the noted mangaka group Clamp,^[11] the first time Clamp had ever been requested to design the characters of an anime series.^[12] Clamp signed onto the project early during these development stages and provided numerous ideas, which helped develop the series’ setting and characters.^[12]

While developing the character designs for Lelouch Lamperouge, the protagonist of the series, Clamp had initially conceived of his hair color as being white.^[12] Ageha Ohkawa, head writer at Clamp, said she had visualized him as being a character to which “everyone” could relate to as being “cool”, literally, a “beauty”.^[12] During these planning stages, Clamp and the Sunrise staff had discussed a number of possible inspirations for the characters, including Kinki Kids and Tackey and Tsubasa.^[12] They had wanted to create a “hit show,” a series which would appeal to “everyone.”^[12] Lelouch’s alter ego, Zero, was one of the earliest developed characters, with Ōkouchi having wanted a mask to be included as a part of the series, feeling it was necessary for it to be a Sunrise show, and Clamp wanting a unique design never prior seen in any Sunrise series (said mask was nicknamed “tulip” for its distinctive design).^[12]

Clamp’s finalized original character design art, illustrated by its lead artist Mokona, was subsequently converted into animation character designs for the series by Sunrise’s character designer Takahiro Kimura, who had previously spent “every day” analyzing Clamp’s art and style from their artbooks and manga series.^[12] In working on the animation character designs, he focused on designing them so as to enable the series’ other animators to apply them without deviating from Clamp’s original art style.^[12]

The music for the series was composed by Kōtarō Nakagawa and Hitomi Kuroishi, who had earlier worked with the series’ core staff in Planetes and Taniguchi’s earlier work Gun X Sword. In addition to the incidental music featured in each episode, Kuroishi also composed numerous insert songs for the series, including “Stories”, “Masquerade”, “Alone”, and “Innocent Days”, which were each performed by Kuroishi herself, while “Picaresque” and “Callin’” were performed by the singer-songwriter Mikio Sakai, who had also earlier worked with Nakagawa and Kuroishi in Planetes. The bands FLOW, Ali Project, Jinn, SunSet Swish, Access, and Orange Range have provided songs for the opening and ending themes.^[13][14]

When the series was being developed for broadcast on Mainichi Broadcasting System, it had been given the network’s Saturday evening prime time slot, which was later changed to a Thursday late night time slot. Due to this change, the overall outlook and some elements of the series were changed and further developed to suit the more mature, late night audience.
